So I've been watching my little 16 year old brother at my parent's house for the last week while they're in MEXICO!?!?! No fair!!! But it's been a blast to hang out with my brother and enjoy the amenities like having a washer and dryer at my disposal and a kitchen with plenty of space! While my parent's house is definitely far better stocked then mine I still have to figure out what to cook with the random things in the fridge, cupboards, and freezer along with feeding something my teenage brother will like!
Hmmmm frozen pizza in the freezer? Eh....my brother suggests making our own. Why not!? My bonus of being in this beautiful house, a Boboli pre-made pizza crust! Take some leftover spaghetti sauce in the fridge, a few slices of large deli pepperoni, some shredded mozzarella and we are good to go! I like to not put too much sauce on but the Boboli crust is relatively substantial compared to a Pillsbury roll out crust so you can add more then you would for that which is great; more flavor! Then I like to put my cheese on. Get at LEAST 2 1/2 cups on there for gooey goodness if you can! But don't be afraid to combine cheeses. Use cheddar, parmesan, mozzarella, monterrey jack. Pizza is good with all kinds! Then I like to sprinkle on oregano. MY GO TO HERB! Just a little sprinkle around to add another layer of flavor. Last I put the pepperoni, meats, vegetables, etc. on top so they can get a nice crust on them! I also feel they don't get as easily lost in flavor amongst the cheese. (This is simply a personal preference :)
After your pizza has been assembled throw it into a 450 degree oven to 475 for about 14 min. For the last 1-2 min you can switch it over to broil to get a beautiful crisp up top and make everything deliciously bubble. Because the last thing you want is to see barely melted cheese and meat and vegetables that haven't melded their flavors with the pizza. You will be missing out if you take your pizza out too soon. So be patient! Don't rush the process. A little dark browning is NOT a bad thing.
My brother and I slammed that pizza in all it's cheesy melty glory. It was a success.
Things to remember:
Pizza is SUPER flexible. BE creative. Try things out! You can make sweet or savory pizzas. It's a great way to use up the small amounts of onion or peppers or use up the mushrooms before they go bad. Whose to say it HAS to have meat on it if it has veg? Why can't it just be a mushroom pizza? I promise you that you can make it taste awesome if you brown it up nice in the oven!
Recipe:
Pizza crust: homemade, fridgerated roll out, or boboli style (it doesn't matter!)
3/4-1 1/4 cup pizza sauce: spaghetti sauce, marinara sauce (whatever you got!)
2 1/2-3 cups cheese: mozzarella, parmesan, cheedar (mix it up!)
pepperoni (or whatever you want for toppings)
oregano
Get your dough out and layer out a decent amount of sauce so it is coated nicely but you can still see through to the crust underneath in spots. Start sprinkling your cheese. You don't really want to be able to see the sauce underneath. More is more in my cheese department! Sprinkle Oregano over the cheese. Around 1 1/4 tsp. Throw your pepperoni on top and slide it into the hot oven on a baking stone, baking sheet, or right on he rack at 450 for 14 min. Broil it if need be for brown crispness! Take it out, let it sit for a minute, slice it like you like it and yum!
